A Winter Message From Mickey
July 13th, 2005

Well here we are, winter again, cold nights, short days, colds and flus - this picture of me was taken when i was sleeping on the couch on one of the wet days we have had recently.
Dogs need shelter from all weather elements, from the cold, the heat, the wind and the rain. They not only need shelter but also require soft bedding especially for the older dogs. If a dog is not comfortable or is not being protected it may cry, howl or bark. Certain breeds feel the cold more than others; Whippets, Grey Hounds, Chihuahuas, Poodles and short coated breeds often suffer in the winter months. Supplying them with a good quality coat or jumper, an appropriately sized kennel (not too big not too small) with lots of soft bedding will help us through the day and the cold nights. For an added bit of warmth you can give us a water bottle, but dont put boiling water in it and make sure it’s well padded, just remember theres some sill pooches out there, they can’t all be as well behaved as me. If you don’t have a water bottle, you can put rice grains in a sock and put it in the microwave making sure that it too is padded. Old and sick dogs really feel the cold and need extra attention especially those that are suffering from arthritis. On a wet or windy day have a look at whether or not the kennel is situated in the best spot to stop the pooch from being affected by the cold. Breeds that are affected by the cold should probably be housed in doors.
Thanks again for visiting, don’t forget to come back and see me for my Spring message.
Keep warm and don’t forget to rug up your pooches on those cold nights.
Mickey
