Compulsory Microchipping

January 13th, 2008

On 1 May 2007 microchipping became compulsory for cats and dogs for first time council registrations in Victoria.

Individual Councils will also have power to require compulsory microchipping of all dogs and cats currently registered. Pets must still be registered by three months of age.

Microchipping is a great form of permanent identification. The small chip is injected under the skin at the back of the neck around the shoulder blade area. Microchips have an individual code number that can be read by a scanner. Pounds, shelters and veterinary clinics have microchip scanners that read these chips to allow quick and easy identification of your pet. If your pet is lost it can be reunited with you more quickly.

Microchipping is quick and easy and can be organised at your veterinary clinic or licensed chipper. Some council’s organise microchipping days for their rate-payers. Contact your local council or visit the National Pet Register to see if there is an upcoming event near you.
