Pets and the Christmas Holiday period

January 13th, 2008

Many people use the Christmas holiday period to adopt a new pet, but is this the best time? It may be a good time because:

  • You have time to research the type of pet that is suitable for you.
  • You and the children are holidaying at home this year.

However, you must consider the welfare of the pet when you and your family resume school or work. A pet is a ten to fifteen year commitment. Think about the type of pet that would best suit your lifestyle and needs. There are many things to take into consideration for example:

  • The size of your yard
  • Ongoing costs of having a pet
  • Time you can spend with the animal
  • Where will the dog stay while you are on holidays?
  • Are there other pets in the household?
  • Do you have adequate fencing?
  • Dietary requirements
  • Health care requirements
  • Training requirements

Do as much research as possible to help ensure you and your new pal are best suited for each other and you will both be rewarded with years of enjoyment.

Also remember, especially at Christmas time, never to buy a pet for someone else. A pet is a ten to fifteen year commitment and the intended recipient may not be prepared for a pet. The Lost Dogs´ Home has adoption vouchers available, which would make a great Christmas Gift.

A pet is for life not just for Christmas.
